There is an American folk tradition of making knives from rail road spikes.
Spikes are a metal people choose because it’s more or less free.
However this is not a metal one should choose for a performance tool. Even the HC RR spikes are low at maybe 0.3% or 0.4%, low enough that people will quench in water for maximum hardness and not temper because “maximum” at .4% just isn’t that hard.
It’s HC for the purposes of the rail road but for blade smiths it may as well be medium or mild.
    So maybe something like 4140?
But really seems a shame to do all that work for just a substandard blade?
just plan some of your handle work and lunch time during at least one 2 hour temper at 204C immediately after quenching.
or do a simple blacksmiths style knife, finish with a quench and a temper and have the guys do a second temper at home?

    OK best of luck!
